A LEADING healthcare advocate and former president of the World Medical Association Kgosi Letlape has called on tobacco harm reduction and smoke-free products stakeholders to advocate for policies that are based on science and not belief. Dr Letlape said the problem with tobacco-related diseases largely comes from combustion. He said there is need to understand that any piece of framework that is worth its sort, that is not harmful to society, has to embrace the principles of harm reduction and smoke-free products as is the premise in article 1D of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FTCT). “In South Africa and beyond, we are facing an impending challenge with proposed new tobacco bills, some of which are heading towards a probative stance.
